Optimization of sealed tube graphitization method for environmental C-14 studies using MICADAS

In most cases, the last step of the sample preparation for 14C dating by AMS is the production of graphite from pure carbon-dioxide gas samples. The sealed tube zinc-hydrogen reduction (used in combination of titanium-hydride and zinc reagents, TiH2-Zn method) graphitization method is routinely used in AMS measurements in Atomki in case of samples with carbon content ranging from 1 mg to ~250 μg using our MICADAS type AMS instrument. However, in many cases the extracted carbon amount is less than this. When dealing with carbon contents between 250 μg – 50 μg, an alternative micro-graphitization method is used where the sole reduction agent is zinc (Zn-method). In case of samples with even smaller carbon content (under 50 μg), the use of a gas ion source connected to the AMS gives better results than the graphite measurement method.
