Finite Difference Method

One of our profiles is the computerized analysis of the groundwater seepage, along with the possible spread of pollutants in sedimentary formations. The software, which uses finite difference method, is helping us to make such simulations. It was developed by the Canadian company, named Waterloo Hydrogeologic and the name of the software is Visual ModFlow Flex (hereinafter VMF). The program combines standard codes used in industry for hydrodynamic and transport simulations, the essential elements for analysis and calibration, and 3D visualization in a user-friendly environment. The model can contribute the field and lab tests successful interpretations and it can be tool for remediation optimization, quantitative estimation of excavation dewatering, environmental impact assessment of abandoned sewage disposal site and test the effect of pumping wells on each other, etc. In addition, we can handle the processes in the saturated (two-phase, water containing solid medium) and unsaturated (three-phase, air + water + solid agent) geological environment separately.

Since the beginning of our existence, we are operating the Paks Nuclear Power Plant environmental monitoring network, as elevations in observation wells and water samples obtained from them gives us data which are important input parameters for modeling. We have continuous reporting obligations towards the Paks NPP through modeling flow and dispersion processes of tritium in it’s local environment. To identify the starting points of tritium contaminations, VMF’s particle tracking method was used and the vertical leakage processes in the unsaturated zone were analyzed with Surfact. To examine the unsaturated zone we are designing a special monitoring well system at the moment.

We took part in the planned Paks II. NPP’s environmental impact study, where the open pits drainage of the new blocks were counted, the effects of the resulting depression and the refilling of the depression on the environment were counted also. We offered a plan for installing observation wells in the vicinity of the new units. We have analyzed the fresh water supply for new units and the load capacity of the supply wells.

Nearby Debrecen an open, uninsulated sewage disposal site was examined after remediation to see the groundwater quality and future estimates are done on the quality improvement of groundwater.

There is a close relationship between the hydrogeological group, the noble gas laboratory, the water chemistry laboratory and tools workshop for the best quality and precision.
